An Overview of the Events, Festivals, and Parties around Tahiti

Overall, Tahitians love a good party and love to sing, dance, eat, and drink. When you are here, finding a good place to party and just have fun is never hard. From cultural festivals to just a good 'ole get together, there is always something going on, no matter which island you visit.

The music, singing, and dance of French Polynesia has been around for hundreds of years. Tahitians were holding ceremonies and festivals throughout their history until the missionaries arrived, and banned the traditional forms of Polynesian dance. But, when the French arrived and took over, this wonderful form of folk dance was revived and is still popular today. The French created the “Tiaurai”, a grand dance festival that was held every year in Tahiti. In the mid-1970's, the name was changed to the Heiva I Tahiti and is now a world renown festival and major event throughout the islands.

While preparing for this massive festival, each villiage and town around the islands lights up with song and music that is native to Tahiti. Although the main festival is held on Tahiti, there are always smaller festivals held throughout the islands for everyone to enjoy.

During the festival, visitors can enjoy and sample traditional Tahitian dancing, singing, food, and drink and enjoy hundreds of different events. Some of these other events that just cannot be missed include: stone lifting contests, fruit races, fire walking, contests, historical reenactments, spear throwing, and the famous canoe races. This massive festival usually lasts for over a month, and never slows down until the very end.

Basically, no matter what time of the year you visit, there is always something going on in Tahiti for everyone to enjoy!
